My 98 Jimmy is barely running. Strong egg smell out the exhaust. The an area of the muffler shell is popping in and out. It can barely move on its own power and surges sometimes. I can hear something in the exhaust before the cat....like there is something clanking in there.

Occasionally, over the past few years the exhaust will gurgle at startup and after you shut it off. Kind of like the sound a roman candle makes when it shoots up one of the flares.

easy answer, catalic(mis-spelt need coffee) converter needs to be replaced,one that is clogged will do all you describe.

 

Have you seen this happen before?
Does the muffler have to be replaced as well? Or does it usually kill that as well?

Your Muffler should be fine, unless small chuncks of the cat broke loose and went thru the exuast system. How old is the exhaust system on it? Are you planning to keeping the truck for a while or just short trem? If it was me, I would just replace the entire exhaust system, if I was planning to keep it. Again that's just me....
