Crankshaft / Camshaft relearn

Default Crankshaft / Camshaft relearn

So as I have been reading and as I have unitentionally done (before I read the posts) was moved/removed/replaced the cam shaft sensor and the distributor. Now, as I understand I need to do a relearn to correct this issue. Without having to purchase one of the scan tools, is there a way to do the relearn procedure with out one?

Is there a place that might have one to rent out?

Or is there anyone in the san antonio area that might have access to one that I could borrow? Or know of a shop that might have one?

Your best bet is going to be a dealership regretfully. It requires an advanced scanner like the GM tech 2. Hopefully they won't charge very much because it is literally a 5 minute procedure. I have a buddy that works for the local dealership and we did it when I got my tuned pcm.

Do you know how much the dealership there normally charges? I'm sure you got off easy having a buddy that works there and what not. I'm just trying to get an estimation on how much I am looking at spending.

anything $50 and under I would consider to be a good deal anything more than that and that would be a little pricey for me. Especially since what you said about it being a 5 minute procedure.

Yeah, all it cost me was a beer lol. I would hate to guess how much they would charge you. Try calling around and explain the situation and the fact that you know its a 5 minute procedure and see what they say.

All they have to do is hook up the scanner, do a normal run cycle then a WOT. Maybe one more run, don't remember exactly but there is no real work involved. Haggle and complain if needed, sometimes it helps lol.

The camshaft position sensor is adjusted by rotating the distributor and watching camshaft retard on a scan tool. There is no "relearn" for it.

The crankshaft position sensor relearn needs to be done only if the crankshaft position sensor or timing cover, are moved, removed, replaced, or disturbed in any way. The reason the relearn is necessary is to "sync" the sensor with the crankshaft. The PCM uses the data for ignition timing, cylinder misfire identification, fuel injector timing, etc etc. If the relearn is not done, the engine will most likely still run, but the PCM will use the "sync" data from the last relearn, which is now incorrect.

Each procedure requires a scan tool capable of accessing both procedures. Each one is less than half an hour labor.

Ill have to do the calling around part tomorrow. All the dealers around here are closed on, you know, they one day a week devoted to guys working on their cars, Sunday.
